Anthony Joshua and His secrets (Health Hacks)
When the determination to excel kicks in, it's like the fictional pill in "limitless" the euphoria for success takes over and we mostly want to do it all, relentlessly attempting to cover
all areas and work overtime if we have to, just to make sure we leave no loose
ends and perfect every skill needed to win. But we forget a tiny little detail;
there is always a secret in winning with exceptions of flukes of course.
A
wise person knows it is almost impossible to cover all areas and perfect them,
but if you can find your key strengths and build on them while reducing your
weaknesses, you actually stand a chance to greatly increase your winning
potential. It’s almost like a swot analysis of your performance. Specifically
focusing on your strengths, building and perfecting them makes you look
extra-ordinary, in some cases larger than life. While reducing or concealing
your weaknesses eludes your competition and makes you a more formidable
opponent.
Anthony
Joshua has done the impossible, by unifying the IBF, WBA, and WBO world
heavyweight boxing titles, he has earned his position as an undisputed champion
that will echo for ages and he is equally famed for the thrilling nature of his
knockout victories in the ring.
He
needs no introduction, He is an excellent boxer! the 28-year-old is also an
extraordinary athlete. Joshua is 6-foot-6, has a 47-inch chest, and a 17-inch bicep. Even his legs
are huge, as he has a 27-inch thigh and 17-inch calf.
The exceptional performance this athlete displays in the boxing ring,
most will think lies with the conventional tedious boxing routing which mostly
includes; sparring, punching bags, or weightlifting, apparently — it turns out,
for Joshua, it's just a matter of training the mind and getting it to a
psychologically imposing state, where it dictates to the body and all of the
organs how to respond and not the other way round. Surprisingly, that is what
works for the champ. Let’s explore these secret mind techniques the champ uses
to stay ahead of the game.
Here is what he had to say about his secret daily routing;
Mind
Conditioning
“It’s just a mental thing now. When you’re really trying and your coach
is saying ‘that’s not good enough’, it’s more of a mental game.
It used to be like physical torture on the body, but now it’s a mental
challenge. I’m thinking: how am I going to get through today and improve on
this? How am I going to be better today than I was yesterday?”
I do running and shadow boxing while they pump in nitrogen to simulate a
lower-oxygen environment. It helps to build red blood cells so you get fitter.”
As a boxer, you have to learn to
switch on and off, to relax your muscles then tense them up, so it’s good to
practise switching your core on and off when you train.”
This is an effective way Joshua controls his body and performance. By
manipulating the entire body system, strength is gained, fear is eliminated
while skill is maintained.
Mind Enhancement
Anthony
has been training for the biggest fight of his life since January and he’s even
taken up learning Spanish to stimulate his mind when he’s not working out.
Here
is Joshua talking about observing and learning;
“I often go down to a sandpit and do a lot of boxing movements in the
sand. It’s really heavy on the legs and it is similar to how the Brazilians
learn to play football. If you look at top players like Pele and Ronaldinho,
their secret was to play football in the sand because it builds up the strength
and stability and balance in the legs.
The unbeaten
Olympic gold medallist has three sparring partners who try and beat him to a
pulp but he says the process is character-building because “no-one wants to get
punched in the face”.
You might be
wondering what all these have to do with boxing but wait until you read
what professions have to say about these mind stimulating activities.
Not only do they
Improve memory, they also enhance the ability to
multi-task, Sharpens the mind, keep the mind sharper for longer, ultimately enhances
decision-making while building endurance. Now you see why these mental
techniques are superior mind stimulating skills that is invaluable to any
profession.
Result Oriented Thinking
"There are so many ways to get results, but I think stretching,
because stretching has longevity, you can get an actual sweat on, a workout out
of it, and you can see results," Joshua said during an interview with
Marie Claire where he was asked for his one tip for
maximising results in the gym.
He added: "You can actually gauge results which is always good for
someone who’s new to working out, or if you’re result-driven. I think that’s
always good to see when you’re training."
Joshua is big on stretching, like any smart person is result driven, He
knows that it is not hard work that people want to see but the result of it,
therefore it is imperative to highlight the winning routings and concentrate on
them while the others follow. Mentally focusing on what your body responds to
and how to leverage that strength is extremely valuable.
But how does
Anthony hone his muscular physique? In a video for BBC Three, Anthony reveals
he goes into “beast mode” while giving fans a sneak peak at the kind of
exercises he does to prepare for a fight.
Obviously he
incorporates a mix of cardio, strength training and sparring, he always focuses
on his core, glutes and legs because that’s the foundation of his power this is
typical for boxers.
“On a typical training day I will get up at
6.30am and finish training at 8pm. I’ll do running, stretching, and then three
gym sessions about 11.30am, 1.30pm and 5.30pm, so I am done by about 8pm.
Then he does two
hours at a strength and conditioning centre before having a rest and hitting
the boxing gym.
On an average
day, Antony wakes up at the crack of dawn and does 40 minutes of cardio like
swimming, running or biking.
Keeping the mind grounded
Here Joshua explains how he keeps himself grounded.
“Boxing training is still quite old-school and rugged in many ways. I
like it that way because it keeps you grounded. There is not much glitz and
glamour. You don’t need much to be a boxer –a pair of gloves, some shorts, a
heavy bag and a coach.
Boxing can be a real rags-to-riches story and that is what catches
people’s attention. I definitely like it for that reason.”
Last minute
Motivation
“In that final walk to the ring, all I’m thinking is: ‘There is no
turning back. This is all or nothing now.’ In every fight I gain a new
experience.
My aim for my next fight is to relax and really centre myself and do
what I do day in day out in the gym. In the gym you can do amazing stuff then
on fight night the pressure gets to you and you can’t always execute it. This
time I’m going to keep my head in the game and stay chilled out.”
This might seem cliché, but last minute motivation is the equivalent of
losing or gaining a mojo and could mean the difference between a winning
situation as a result of maintained
confidence and a devastating loss due to fear.
Final
Thoughts
When it’s all said and done, finding your secret to success is almost
like discovering new super powers. While Joshua has specific routing that give
him added advantage in the ring, he equally masters the power of the mind,
which is something we can all do. Conditioning the mind to control our emotions
is difficult but possible with practice. A result oriented thinking compels us
to measure our performance and lastly last minute motivation is a powerful weapon
to enter any kind of competition with.
